Nursing Managers Activities:
- Supervise patients nursing care activities
- Oversees adherence of nurses to professional ethics
- Manages the patients' care setting (Cleanliness, movement of people etc.)
- Ensures resources for patient treatment and care are in place in their respective wards (drugs, equipment, supplies)
- Respond to patients' complaints.
- Hospital quality improvement and audit unit activities:
- Coordinates quality improvement activities at the hospital.
- Conducts quarterly audits on clinical practices
- Produces quality improvement, procedures, standards guidelines and auditing tools.
- Supervises and produces a monthly patient management duties and nursing care report to management.
- Hospital Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) and Health Care Waste Management unit Activities:
- Monitor infection prevention control activities at the hospital
- Conducts training on infection prevention control and health care wastes management.
- Distributes sharp boxes, waste disposal bags and containers
- Produces manuals and standards guidelines on IPC
Hospital Health Education and Counselling Unit Activities:
- Produces manuals, standards guidelines on health education & counseling materials.
- Conduct individual health education/counseling or group health education on daily basis.
- Monitor health education and counseling activities at the hospital

CENTRAL STERILE AND SUPPLY DEPARTMENT (CSSD)
The Central Sterile and Supply Department (CSSD) is a critical support service in a hospital responsible for the decontamination, cleaning, assembly, sterilization, storage, and distribution of surgical instruments, medical devices, and other sterile supplies used throughout the hospital. It plays a vital role in infection prevention and control, ensuring that all reusable medical instruments and supplies are safe for patient care and efficiency for clinical operations.
OBJECTIVES OF CSSD
i. To ensure the supply of properly cleaned, sterilized, and functional medical instruments and equipment to all departments.
ii. To prevent hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) by maintaining strict sterilization standards.
iii. To ensure efficient inventory management of sterile supplies.
iv. To support the smooth operation of Operating Theatres (OTs) and other critical care areas by providing timely and sterile instrument
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF HEAD OF UNIT
i. Supervise and lead the CSSD team (technicians, assistants, and support staff).
ii. Ensure adequate staffing and skill levels to meet hospital demands
iii. Assign duties, prepare duty rosters, and manage shift rotations.
iv. Ensure proper cleaning, disinfection, sterilization, and storage of surgical instruments and medical equipment.
v. Liaison with OT (Operating Theatre), ICUs, EMD and other clinical departments to meet daily sterilization and supply demands.
vi. Participate in budget planning for equipment, consumables, and staffing.
vii. Promote a culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement
viii. Ensure policies and SOPs are current, followed, and available for review.
ix. Maintain environment and workflow to meet regulatory standards
x. Ensure compliance with hospital infection control policies and international standards
xi. Train CSSD staff in sterilization techniques, infection control, and equipment handling.
xii. Ensure ongoing education and competency assessments.
xiii. Manage urgent requests and ensure quick turnaround of instruments.
xiv. Participate in planning of surgical cases requiring special instrument sets.
xv. Implement and monitor quality assurance programs (e.g., biological indicators, chemical indicators, physical indicators, Bowie-Dick tests).
xvi. Ensure all sterilizers (e.g., autoclaves) are functional and maintained per manufacturer guidelines.
xvii. Schedule and document preventive maintenance and Liaise with biomedical engineering for repairs and servicing.
xviii. Oversee inventory of sterile supplies, instruments, and disposables.
xix. Liaise with procurement to ensure availability of consumables and spare parts.
xx. Implement cost-effective sterilization practices without compromising safety.
