The institute started by running three (3) years medical assistant training course in 1972. The course was conducted for 14 years. In 1985 the institute was changed from training Diploma in clinical medicine to Advanced Diploma in Clinical Medicine whereby graduates were Assistants Medical Officers (AMOs), up to now about 1120 AMOs have graduated. The AMO School was changed to Lake zone health training institute (LZHTI) in 2017. The Institute was accredited by NACTE in August 2017. Currently, the institute has changed from lake zone health training institute (LZHTI) to Mwanza College of Health and Allied Sciences (MWACHAS) in 2019, there are six departments; Clinical Medicine, Physiotherapy, Health Information sciences, Pharmacy, Nursing, Gender and Community Development and Health Professional Education. The Institute has the Quality Assurance Unit (QAU) to monitor the quality of training, services, infrastructure, clinical, governance and administration. The quality assurance is contacted in order to improve and maintain the quality training programs and services so as to comply with the requirements of regulatory authorities for examples NACTE.

- This includes providing financial reports and documentation to demonstrate the college's financial health and adherence to budgetary plans.
Staff Supervision:
- Supervises and maintains attendance records and performance standards for the college staff.

MWACHAS NURSING DEPARTMENT
Nursing is one of the four department forming Mwanza College of Allied and Health Sciences (MWACHAS), formerly known as Bugando Nursing School, till 2018 when the government decided to merge its schools ( ie. Nursing, Physiotherapy, Pharmacy, and Health Information System) into one college then it became a department under MWACHAS. MWACHAS is Government owned College under the Ministry of Health found in Bugando Medical Centre premises.
ACTIVITIES DONE AT THE DEPARTMENT:
The Tutors are responsible to:
- Receiving of selected students by NACTEVET ready to start the Nursing and Midwifery course for a particular semester as per NACTEVET Curriculum.
- Orient the incoming Nurse and Midwife students (NTA L4) to the Diploma Nursing and Midwifery Curriculum, Assessment plan, modules and to the practicum sites before starting of formal classes.
- Orient students to various school premises, regulations and by laws pertaining to the course including disciplinary actions, to which students are liable to abide to ie put on decent clothes and be neat, show respect to clients, demonstrate proper communication skills, love, and competence, commitment, honest and confidence.
- Facilitate learning to nurse students, theoretically in classes and practically in skills lab and Clinical areas.
- Prepare continuous Assessment examination (CATs) to Evaluate student performance, at the beginning and at the end of semester.
- Prepare Cum rotation na Clinical rotation ‘to enable student nurses practice various nursing skills in different hospital departments; like Maternity wards, Emergency dept, Pediatric , Medical, Surgical , Psychiatric, Administration dept etc.
- Conduct assessment of the Community in collaboration of village leaders to identify areas where students can practice their skills (community field work) in the identified Community and Health facility.
- Provide supportive supervision to nurse students at their practicum sites (in the Clinical area and Community) ; solve their learning and social challenges that are hindering their studies and work with students and Community to solve identified health issues.
- Participating in short course preparation to train newly employed tutors teaching in Health Schools found in the Lake Zone and outside Lake Zone.
- Participating in preparation of final nursing Examinations; taking part in Assessing and invigilating qualifying Nursing and Midwifery Examination conducted all over Nursing schools in Tanzania.
- Collaborate with Hospital authority at different levels to assist graduate nurse get chances to work as volunteers

MWANZA COLLEGE OF HEALTH AND ALLIED SCIENCES is owned by government of Tanzania. The college has four programs which are Ordinary Diploma in Health Information Science, Ordinary Diploma in Nursing and Midwifery, Ordinary Diploma in physiotherapy and Ordinary Diploma in Pharmaceutical sciences.
Admission office activities are as follows:
- Provide advice to form four and form six graduates on program that they can pursue based on their performance in form four national examinations.
- Provide information on entry requirement needed to join on each program. The minimum entry requirements for each program are:
- Ordinary Diploma in Health Information Science entry requirements: Pass in English, Mathematics, Biology and one non-religious subject (minimum entry requirement is D).
- Ordinary Diploma in Nursing and Midwifery entry requirements: Pass in Chemistry, Biology, Physics and one non-religious subject (minimum entry requirement is D.
- Ordinary Diploma in physiotherapy entry requirements: Pass in Chemistry, Biology, Physics and one non-religious subject (minimum entry requirement is D).
- Ordinary Diploma in Pharmaceutical sciences entry requirements: Pass in Chemistry, Biology, and two non-religious subjects (minimum entry requirement is D).
How to apply: Online application on NACTVET website www.nacte.go.tz
- Receive all students who were selected by NACTVET and President’s Office – Regional Administration and Local Government (PO-RALG) and enrol them in NACTVET system before starting their studies.
- Transfer students to next level yearly for those who are passed their examination and change student’s status in NACTVET system according to student request e.g. POSTPONED.
- Assist students on transfer from one college to another by approve or reject in NACTVET system. This depends with vacancy on program requested.
